mri knee meniscus extrusion tear root
  • Loss of Joint Space from degeneration and cartilage loss is the most obvious cause.

  • The reduction in joint space results in the meniscus being " squeezed" out of the joint like toothpaste.

  • BUT...there is another important cause to look for..

  • The meniscal roots fix the meniscus to the tibia.

  • They are very important for maintaining stability of the meniscus and transmission of stress.

  • Root tears result in accelerated joint degeneration.

  • Posterior Root tears are a common cause of meniscus extrusion.

  • When there is meniscal extrusion.

  • There may be loss of joint space which may be the only cause BUT…

  • Always look at the posterior horn root for a tear.
