Ankylosing Spondylitis Sacroiliitis CT changes MRI Online Radiology Course

Another three quick images with some basic key points from our online spine MRI courses.

Here we look at the changes seen on CT at the Sacro Iliac Joint.

ankylosing spondylitis 1 scelrosis & erosions radedasia

Bony erosions and sclerosis are the common findings on CT. Look for irregularity of the margins at the SIJ with sclerosis deep to the erosions. The sclerosis represents areas of previous inflammation that have resolved and sclerosed.

ankylosing spondylitis 2 sij fusion radedasia

Fusion of the SIJ is a late finding. Initial chondral destruction followed by progressive ossification.

ankylosing spondylitis 3 capsular ossification radedasia

As a late stage finding ossification of the capsule can occur. Look for linear ossification at the superior > inferior margins.
